Spotlight on the Eurochild Children’s Council: An exciting 2018 ahead
As you might know, we made some very ambitious plans in our Child Participation Strategy, adopted at the GA in April 2017. Eurochild members and children are now in full action to implement these plans. The National Eurochild Forums (NEFs) have started their work, and the Eurochild Children Council (ECC) has continued its work after the holiday break. And 2018 is promising to be very exciting!
After selecting 12 children from 11 different countries to join the ECC in July 2017, the group started working online. Sadly one of our members had to withdraw from our work in October, leaving us a team of 11 engaged young people, aged 13-16 years old to carry out the work.
We met for the first time in Brussels in November where we started planning for our work ahead until the end of the mandate, in April 2019. During that meeting we also visited the European Parliament, where the ECC members took part in a high-level panel event organised by Eurochild, UNICEF and the European Parliament Intergroup on Children‘s Rights, under the auspices of EP President, Antonio Tajani. You can read all about the event here.
The ECC members also scheduled meetings with MEPs from their countries. They had discussions with them about issues that are important to them, and on how they can cooperate to make Europe better for children and young people. In addition to that they spent time getting to know each other, had a training on advocacy together with Eurochild‘s Child Participation Reference Group, worked on a consultation for the Day of General Discussion on Children as Human Rights Defenders organised by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, and discussed the next Eurochild Strategy, to name a few. More information and a video summary of our whole meeting in November can be found here.
In the beginning of 2018 the ECC was joined by an extra member, bringing the group back to 12 young persons. After the first online meeting of 2018, the ECC has started work to follow up on the committment to children‘s rigths made by European Parliament President, Tajani, during our event last November. More about that soon to come. Other things we are working on include planning our further involvement in the previously mentioned Day of General Discussion, preparing for our participation in the Eurochild General Assembly in April and developing our own personal capicities. The ECC has also been nominated by the European Association Awards under the category of Most Innovative Development for its first ever European Children's Council. We are very proud of the nomination and await the results on 23 February.
The ECC has a full programme for 2018, each month one of the ECC representatives, Angelina, Anna, Arthur, Dalia, Ellie, Ilian, Jan, Kaja, Konstantinos, Sharon, Simonida and Xabier, will be telling you all about the latest developments, and a little bit about themselves in the eNews Bulletin and our website.
