Eurochild assessment of the European Commission's 2010 Report on the application of the EU Charter on Fundamental Rights and its contribution to protecting children's rights in the EU
On the 30th March 2011 the European Commission published its first Report on the application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The objective of the Report is to illustrate how the Charter is being applied in all its six titles (Dignity, Freedoms, Equality, Solidarity, Citizen‟s rights and Justice) through concrete examples. The rights of the child are addressed by the Report in a separate section under the Equality title.
Whilst Eurochild welcomes this positive initiative and recognises the Report‟s potential in ensuring a wider respect of fundamental rights in the EU, we have concerns regarding its limited scope and the apparent failure to set it within a broader framework of promotion and protection of children‟s rights in all EU policies and action.
