Eurochild's Response to the Consultation on the European Commission's Communication on the Rights of the Child (2011-2014)
The best interest of the child principle must have the primacy when designing and implementing policies that impact on the rights of the child. But to assess the best interests of the child there is the need to first and foremost understand what children themselves think.
Eurochild considers that the Consultation on the European Commission’s Communication on the Rights of the Child does not seek to involve children, building on previous initiatives such as the 2002 consultation on the White Paper on Youth, which launched a one year pan-EU consultation with young people. Children are fully-fledged citizens and must be recognized as such – childhood cannot be seen just as a step towards adulthood.
