Stories of Hope: The Essential Role of Psychological Support for Children of War

Blog by Olga Yarmolyuk from Eurochild member Children of Heroes, sharing families' stories and data that reveal how their vital mental health support helps children in Ukraine heal and rebuild their lives.

Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine has left thousands of children struggling with grief, loss, and trauma. Many have lost one or both parents, witnessed destruction firsthand, or endured displacement. Without adequate psychological support, they face long-term risks such as anxiety, depression, and emotional distress.

The Children of Heroes Charity Fund is committed to providing comprehensive mental health support to these vulnerable children and their guardians. The Fund’s approach extends beyond individual therapy, offering social adaptation programs, group counselling, and community-building initiatives to promote resilience and healing.

Stories of Strength and Recovery

The Malyar Family’s Healing Journey

After losing their father, a firefighter-turned-soldier, in 2022, the Malyar children struggled with profound grief. The eldest daughter developed anxiety and a speech impediment. Art therapy provided her with a safe outlet, gradually restoring her confidence. Her sister, who had always loved dancing, turned to her passion as a way to process her sadness. Their brother found solace in sports, channelling his pain into physical activity. Their youngest brother struggled with anger, but through martial arts and counselling, he learned to process emotions constructively. With ongoing support, the Malyar children continue to heal, honouring their father’s memory.

Milana and Olena’s Strength

Milana and her mother, Olena, fled their home in the Sumy region after the loss of Milana’s father, a reconnaissance commander. Overwhelmed by grief, they turned to the Children of Heroes Fund for support. Joint therapy sessions helped them validate their emotions. A psychologist introduced Milana to painting, which became her primary method of emotional expression. Through art and social adaptation programs, she found friendships and a renewed sense of belonging.

Oleksandra’s Journey

Before the full-scale invasion, Oleksandra lived happily with her parents in Donetsk. In 2022, she lost her father in combat, and a year later, her grandfather. Overwhelmed by grief, she became withdrawn, fearing further loss. Psychological support from the Children of Heroes Fund helped her express emotions safely and develop coping mechanisms. With ongoing care, Oleksandra is slowly rebuilding her confidence and sense of security.
