No neutrality in genocide: EU citizens demand the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement

While the public's attention around Palestine decreased, Israeli forces continued their attacks, even after the declared ceasefire. According to the European Commission, the State of Israel is responsible for an unprecedented level of killing and injury of civilians.
We at Eurochild repeatedly asked Europe to act to stop the violence and ensure children trapped in Gaza are safely reunited with their families in Europe. We condemned Israel's use of hunger as a weapon, the siege and bombardment, the blockade of humanitarian aid, the mass displacement of civilians and the EU’s silence and double-standard in upholding human rights.
And as a concrete action, we have also been asking for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement until Israel abides by international law and implements the International Court of Justice's rulings. Now, this initiative draws attention once again to this request.
What's the agreement and why is it important?
Article 2 of the EU-Israel association agreement provides that “Relations between the Parties, as well as all the provisions of the Agreement itself, shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles, which guide their internal and international policy and constitute an essential element of this Agreement”
With more than 34% of Israel's imports originating from the EU, and 28.8% of Israeli exports flowing to the EU, the EU is Israel’s first trade partner. Despite the evidence of multiple violations of human rights and international law, the European Union has not taken any meaningful action.
There is no neutrality in genocide. By failing to act, the EU is disregarding a core condition of its own trade agreement.
