20 Years of fighting for children's rights in Europe

Press Release

Malta, 3 July 2024 - More than 160 people attended the Eurochild Convention in Malta on 2-3 July 2024. Representatives from the United Nations, European Commission, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights and the Maltese Government joined Eurochild members and guests in the discussions on how to tackle child poverty and social exclusion across Europe.

The focus was "Fostering Rights-Based Solutions to Tackle Child Poverty and Social Exclusion across Europe". The event, co-hosted by Eurochild and the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, featured 15 workshops and study visits.

“In these challenging times, the rise of far-right movements in Europe, the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and the disparate treatment of children in these regions underscore the work ahead. We must amplify our voices, advocate for just policies, and ensure no child is left behind. The discussions and workshops highlighted the transformative power of early childhood development and the need for systemic reforms to address structural inequalities. Together, we can make a difference.” - Said Sabine Saliba, Eurochild Secretary General.

The event was also an occasion to celebrate the achievements of thenetwork founded exactly 20 years ago. We have produced a summary of our work showcasing how we supported the advancement of children's rights throughout emerging issues and emergencies.

Thanks to our members for 20 years we have been exchanging knowledge, giving a voice to children and influencing EU and national governments to make sure they prioritise children and families’ needs. Following the history of Eurochild is following the history of children’s rights in Europe, from the economic crisis, the pandemic, wars and the protection of children in migration.

Eurochild has contributed remarkably in the fight against child poverty, against institutionalisation and in favour of family based care and the prioritisation of early childhood development in public policies and funding.

Our work continues! We are striving for a society where all children and young people grow up happy, healthy, confident and respected as individuals in their own right!
