In this session ALMA presented the basic terminology to use when talking about autism and disabilities. Words have the power to shape social consciousness, they can perpetuate stereotypes even when used in jokes or without the aim of harming others. Using the right words boost acceptance and equality, and weaken any social, age, gender, or racial discrimination. The presentation also included a “good manners guide” with do’s and don’ts.
Other highlights of the day were the success stories told by people on the spectrum and the personal testimonies of their relatives and friends.
The President of ALMA, Mrs. Katerina Giannakopoulou, prοposed the “Αutism Friendly Zone” badge for shops and stores with suitable conditions for serving people with autism. The Mayor, Mr. Yiannis Fostiropoulos, called Paleo Phalero, as an “Autism Friendly City” with the slogan: “Here, it’s OK to be Different”.
