Eurochild Children’s Council member Lana becomes Children’s Mayor of Opatija

Lana, 12, will advocate for more green areas and recreational spaces for children

Lana, a member of the 3rd Eurochild Children’s Council and the 2nd National Eurochild Forum in Croatia is the new Children’s mayor of the Children’s City Council of the City of Opatija. Lana also received the Best Children’s Act prize for her humanitarian work volunteering in the Workshop and Playroom for Developmental Support to Children with Developmental Disabilities “Hummingbirds” by our member Society “Our Children” Opatija.

After her election, Lana said: “I am proud to have been elected as the children's mayor and I will try my best to perform this function. Thanks to all my friends and classmates who voted for me. I will be your mayor with a full heart and a big smile. My goals are to proudly represent Opatija - the most beautiful city for children, to advocate for the construction of a swimming pool and the renovation of the soccer field, as well as for more green areas. My wish is to have a children's city garden where children can plant herbs and trees in cooperation with the parks. I will promote humanitarian activities in which children help others. I will also try to organise children's weekends in Slatina with games and entertainment, as well as to encourage cooperation with children from other cities and municipalities”. As part of her presentation, Lana also shared colorful hearts with messages to her colleagues, as symbols of love and respect for diversity.

In the elections for the Children's City Council, together with the mayor, 17 new councilors were elected. During their two-year mandate, they will discuss topics related to the life of Opatija, the well-being of their citizens, and what should be implemented in order to advance and improve the life of children in city. Fernando Kirigin, Mayor of the City of Opatija, and his deputy Kristina Đukić congratulated the new Children’s mayor and junior councilors on their election and wished them success in the upcoming mandate.

At the constitutional session, the councillors of the Children’s City Council of the City of Opatija voted for the project that they will implement during their mandate and chose by majority the topic "I offer you a hand - joint activities with children with developmental disabilities".

In 2018 Petra, another former Eurochild Children's Council member was also appointed Opatija's Children's Mayor at the time of the Eurochild Conference "Building a better Europe with children: All Aboard!" which was hosted in Opatija and was attended by more than 300 children and young people.
