Cyprus' Child Guarantee National Action Plan - An overview
2021 was a turning point in the fight against child poverty, with the launch of two landmark initiatives, the EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child and the European Child Guarantee.
As EU Member States submit their Child Guarantee National Action Plans, Eurochild will share highlights from each plan that members, children's rights advocates and influencers can use in their own work to ensure children's rights remain high on the political agendas across Europe.
The Cypriot government submitted Cyprus' Child Guarantee National Action Plan (NAP) in November 2022.
The Cypriot Child Guarantee National Action Plan focuses on:
- Integrated approach to increase social inclusion, improve children’s well-being and reduce child poverty: Vulnerable electricity customers protection measures, Free transport to school, National strategic Framework for Equity, Inclusion and Participation of Roma, Programme for the prevention and combating of violence in the family, and sexual abuse and child sexual exploitation, Recruitment of professionals, Guaranteed Minimum Income (GMI).
- Early Childhood Education and Care: Extension of free compulsory pre-primary education, Low tuition fees or exemption from tuition fees in state-run preschools, Subsidy for community preschools, Support for children with learning, emotional and other difficulties.
- Educational and School-Based Activities: School and Social Inclusion Actions+ Programme, Greek language learning programmes, Programme to tackle learning difficulties and early school leaving, Measures to address pupils with special educational needs, Allowance for educational materials and technologies.
- Healthy nutrition: “Meals for pupils in needs” project, Suppport for access to healthy meals outside of school, programmes to promote healthy eating.
- Healthcare: Equal access to the General Health System, Mental health services, In school health services, Health education.
- Adequate housing: Housing provision under the GMI, Integration projects by local authorities/NGO targeted at third-country nationals.
